Kerik Picked to Lead Homeland Security

WASHINGTON — President Bush picked former police commissioner Bernard Kerik, the steady former military man who helped New York get back on its feet after the Sept. 11 terror attack, to head the federal agency charged with making sure it never happens again.

As New York's police commissioner, Bernard Kerik (search) became known after the Sept. 11 attacks as the fierce, sorrowful face of his reeling department. But the former undercover cop has been confronting danger for decades.

His expertise as a crimefighter and his oversight of the NYPD's heroic efforts during the 2001 terrorist attacks earned him international fame and a role as a special adviser to the Iraqi government, which drew on his help to establish a fledgling police force after the toppling of Saddam Hussein.

Now President Bush, who on Thursday selected Kerik to replace Tom Ridge as secretary of the Homeland Security Department, is counting on him to help defend the nation's borders from terrorist attacks like the one that killed nearly 3,000 people in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania more than three years ago.

City-Wide CCTV Coming to Chicago

The city of Chicago plans to deploy more than 2,000 surveillance cameras in public places that would be tied into sophisticated software to spot emergencies or suspicious behavior under a plan announced by Mayor Richard Daley.

“Cameras are the equivalent of hundreds of sets of eyes,” Daley told The Associated Press. “They are the next best thing to having police officers stationed at every potential trouble spot.”

Officials say the bulk of the cameras are already in use at O'Hare International Airport, on the city's transit lines and in public housing, parks and schools. An additional 250 surveillance cameras still to be bought will raise the number available to more than 2,000.

"Living in today's society almost demands access to a cellular telephone. Here is an unconventional use that recently came in handy:

"Two employees were on break near a staff parking lot when they heard a thud. They looked up and saw a vehicle had backed into a parked truck and was departing the area. They were able to get the suspect's vehicle license plate number, though neither had a pen or paper.

"One of the staff members entered it into her cell phone memory so she wouldn't forget. The license plate number was subsequently given to law enforcement officers, who were able to locate the vehicle and its owner. Quick thinking and a cell phone were a great help. Think about what other uses a cell phone can offer, such as a camera
