GE Launches Open Protocol Exchange Network (OPEN) to Promote Standards-based Security Solutions

GE Infrastructure - Security (NYSE: GE) today announced that it has launched and is recruiting member companies for a security industry-wide network to establish and promote open technologies and architectures for the security industry.

The security industry's current reliance on proprietary technologies and platforms inhibits innovation, integration and the assimilation of emerging technologies. The Open Protocol Exchange Network (OPEN) will bring together technology companies to collaboratively establish and make available standards-based solutions for key encryption and management, migration to new security technologies and integration of physical and logical access control platforms.

"Living in today's society almost demands access to a cellular telephone. Here is an unconventional use that recently came in handy:

"Two employees were on break near a staff parking lot when they heard a thud. They looked up and saw a vehicle had backed into a parked truck and was departing the area. They were able to get the suspect's vehicle license plate number, though neither had a pen or paper.

"One of the staff members entered it into her cell phone memory so she wouldn't forget. The license plate number was subsequently given to law enforcement officers, who were able to locate the vehicle and its owner. Quick thinking and a cell phone were a great help. Think about what other uses a cell phone can offer, such as a camera
